Priory Museum

This impressive 12th Century Priory is set in the grounds of Priory Park in front of
the famous 'Old World Garden'. The Museum is currently open Tuesdays and Wednesdays only but please phone first to make sure. Ekco Sports & Social Club
has a thriving membership and is used for Social events, private function hire catering for up to 130 seated, a spacious dance floor, licensed bar, as well as indoor and outdoor sporting activities. Cliffs Pavilion
The Cliffs Pavilion provides a wide and varied programme of events ranging from West End musicals to classical concerts through top named vocalists and comedians to children’s shows, pantomime and even rock concerts. The theatre is open all year round with the auditorium closing only for one-two weeks usually in the Summer/early Autumn for maintenance.

The Lynn Tait Gallery
The Old Foundry, 66 High Street, Old Leigh.
The Gallery is packed with a huge selection of original gifts and carries a superb collection of local pictures and items displayed on period memorabilia, as well as nostalgic heritage pieces and soft toys. It also houses a restored Southend Pier Train.

The Palace Theatre
The Palace Theatre provides a varied range of productions many of these being plays, drama, farces and children’s productions. The main auditorium seats 603 and the Dixon studio 100. The Dixon Studio is a fully functional performance/rehearsal studio that is available for hire by community groups and schools.

The Canvey Point Transport Museum
Once a working Bus Depot, this fine old building is home to a large selection of preserved and restored commercial and non-commercial vehicles. The Museum is run and maintained by volunteers, and features many displays, a themed 1940s room, a video room with the archived material, and a large scale model railway layout.
The Museum is open on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month until its end of season Open Day in October .

The Southend Band
The Southend Band has its roots back in the early part of last century. Its ancestry can be traced back through Southend United Football Supporters' Club Band, Southend British Legion Band, Southend Ambulance Brigade Band, Southend Civil Defence Band and the Southend Military Band. In 1985 the band was appointed to the honorary position of ‘Official Town Band’ by Southend Borough Council.
The Southend Band recently provided a superb concert at the Mayor's official opening of the Priory Park Bandstand, where they are assured to be making regular appearances. |

The Southend Art Club
The Southend Art Club was formed with the aim ‘To promote the appreciation and practice of art in the area’.
Apart from a short break for World War Two, the club can trace its history back to 1929 when it was established as ‘The Southend Art Circle’, and had 25 members.
Today membership exceeds 270 and every year exhibitions of work are held in the town. Several members successfully exhibit at national level and are prominent in Art World circles.

Prittlewell Bowling Club
Formed in 1928,
Prittlewell Bowls is a mixed club and welcomes both men and women to what is considered to be some of the best facilities in the Borough. The Club offers relaxed social bowls to the inexperienced or non-competitive members, or competitive leagues and cup competitions for the more experienced and dedicated bowler.
The clubhouse holds social events, and during the winter months holds short mats for indoor bowling as well as table tennis, whist drives and social occasions.

The Millenium Way Walk
is a delightful walk covering 24 miles in six stages. It covers all aspects of the town from the Golden Mile and the surrounding golden sands, to the beautiful countryside that surrounds the town. A fully illustrated A4 brochure detailing the route with maps and points of interest is available by sending a cheque for £4 to: Ted Lewin, 19 Little Thorpe, Thorpe Bay, Southend, Essex SS1 3RN, enclosing a s.a.e A4 envelope and 2 first class stamps. All proceeds go to the Southend Hospital's StrokeBuster Appeal.

The Southend Ornithological Group
The SOG recording area
is mostly bounded by water, the River Crouch to the north (Bridgemarsh Island is included), the North Sea to the east (Wallasea, Potton and Rushley Islands are included) and the Thames estuary to the south. To the west, the boundary follows the creek north from the Thames at Hole Haven, around the western edge of Pitsea and Vange marshes, to the A13 road. It then follows the A13 east to Sadlers Farm roundabout and from there it runs north along the A130 until it meets the River Crouch near Battlesbridge. Any bird recorded within this area, or seen from this area, is considered recordable for the SOG list.

74 Squadron Association This website forever preserves the history, and offers further reading about 74 "Tiger" Squadron, from its formation on 1st July 1917, when the legendary fighter 'ace' Captain Mick Mannock was one of the Flight Commanders, through the Battle of Britain, to present day.
The site is run by John Crow and Bob Cossey, is very informative, and has been well constructed making it easy to navigate. The site also offers an almost live response to questions and contributions from visitors. |

The Royal Air Forces Association Founded in 1929, the RAFA provide friendship and welfare support to serving and ex-serving members of the RAF and their families. The RAFA are increasingly supporting those people who are serving and have served in more recent conflicts in Korea, Borneo, the Falklands, the Gulf War, Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Kosovo and the latest conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan. |

The Aircrew Association exists to provide the structure, facilities and conditions whereby those who have qualified to operate military aircraft can promote comradeship and enjoy social, intellectual, cultural and sporting activities.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission
Established by Royal Charter in 1917, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission pays tribute to the 1,700,000 men and women of the Commonwealth forces who died in the two World Wars.
The CWGC is a non-profit-making organisation that was founded by Sir Fabian Ware. Since its inception, the Commission has constructed 2,500 war cemeteries and plots, erecting headstones over graves and, in instances where the remains are missing, inscribing the names of the dead on permanent memorials.

36 Regiment Royal Artillery is an interesting and informative website dedicated to all who served in, or were associated with the Biggest Regiment to have been in service in the Royal Regiment of Artillery. It is the home of the History of the Regiment and its Batteries, the Thunderbird Missile System, and lots more. It also features a popular forum. Put into suspension on 31st December 1977, the spirit of the Regiment has been maintained by Annual Reunions. |
