Hello and welcome to The South East Echo

This website is predominantly about Southend-on-Sea, Essex, and is a work in progress towards offering a fairly comprehensive history of the town from its birth to now. This site also has a strong focus on the RAF and Home Defences during the years 1939 and 1945, with details of the squadrons and dossiers on some of the pilots based at RAF Rochford during the conflict.

The new book commissioned to coincide with the 100th Anniversary of the Outbreak of the First World War is to be released in two volumes and will list all the Servicemen who were born or raised in Southend and the surrounding area, and who fell during or as a result of effects of The Great War (From 1914 to 1921) - the Armistice of 11th November 1918 was only the agreement to cease fire; the battles continued until the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on 28th June 1919, and wounded men battled with their wounds for much longer.
If you have records or photographs of family members who took part in the First World War, be they Regular Army, Royal and Merchant Navy, Air Force, Reserves, we would be pleased to hear from you. We are currently researching and cross-referencing material and records at hand. The provisional submission date is September 2012 and we need to have everything inplace for that time. Thank you.
