P/O Charles Stewart baled out of his Spitfire I (P9389) on 24th August, 1940. His aircraft was damaged at 15:45hrs by a Bf 109 over the Thames Estuary. The Spitfire crashed at Kingsdown. He spent time in Canterbury Hospital in the next bed to Michael Shand, also of 54 Squadron.

Charles Stewart was killed in action later in the war.
