W/Cmdr D. H. Smith was born on 18th August 1918.
Donald attended No.3 EFTS in Essendon in 1940, and then went on to No.2 SFTS (Wagga). On 18th August 1940, he attended No.1 ITS in Somers.

In 1941, Donald joined 60 OTU at East Fortune, Scotland, and on 11th October was promoted to Pilot Officer.
In April 1942, Donald was posted to 452 Squadron, and a month later was posted to 126 Squadron.
On 3rd May 1943, Donald joined 41 Squadron where on 14th October, he was promoted to Flight Lieutenant.
On 2nd May 1944, Donald was promoted to Acting Squadron Leader and was the Commanding Officer of 453 Squadron.
On the 1st July, he was promoted to Squadron Leader.

In 1945, Donald was posted as Commanding Officer to No. 11 Personnel Dispatch and Reception Centre, and in February was promoted to Acting Wing Commander.
