On 29th March, he was posted to No.7 EFTS, receiving promotion to Pilot Officer on 23rd September 1942.
John was posted to 72 Squadron on 28th February 1942, and was promoted to Flying Officer on 23rd March.
On 4th August 1942, John was posted to 453 Squadron as Acting Flight Lieutenant, and on 1st November became its Commanding Officer.
On 11th May 1943, John was posted as Acting Wing Commander to take command of RAF Hornchurch, and moving almost two months later on 31st July to take command of RAF Peterhead.
John was promoted on 23rd September to Flight Lieutenant.
In 1944, John was posted to No. 11 Personnel Dispatch & Reception Centre.

John Richard Ratten was killed on 27th February 1945.
