F/Lt. B. H. Way On Thursday, 25th of July 1940, while on patrol protecting a convoy which was under attack from a force of 60 Ju87 Stuka dive-bombers, Basil took part in shooting down one of the Junkers, and then he and the rest of the squadron were jumped by Bf 109s. As his No. 2 was heard to shout a warning to him, Basil was shot down in his Spitfire I (R6707) by a Bf 109 over the Channel near Dover at 15:00 hrs. He was killed. He was 22 years old.
Basil Way is buried at Oostduikerke Communal Cemetery, Belgium.
