Sgt. Swanwick was born on 10th November 1915.
George is known to have been with 504 (Special Reserve) Squadron at RAF Hucknall in the mid-1930s. He qualified as an air gunner in Westland Wallaces and later flew in Hinds.
In May 1936, 504 became part of the Auxiliary Air Force, and in October 1938 converted to a fighter unit, equipped with Gauntlets. George stayed with the squadron to train as an NCO pilot. In August 1939, he earned his flying badge and was promoted to Sergeant.
At the outbreak of war, George was called to full-time service, and after completing training was sent to 7 BGS as a staff pilot in May 1940.
On 7th September, George joined 54 Squadron at Catterick. He left the squadron in December and joined 41 Squadron at Hornchurch.
George was commissioned in October 1941.
In April 1942, he was posted to North Weald to join 222 Squadron as Flight Commander. In July he joined 603 Squadron in Malta.
In September 1942, George was posted to 7 OTU at Port Sudan, still as Flight Commander.
In July 1943, he joined 81 Squadron in Malta as a supernumerary.
George was invalided back to the UK and following his discharge from hospital in 1944, George held various staff appointments until the end of the war.
In 1949, George was granted a Permament Commission and retired on 30th April 1970, as a Wing Commander.
