P/O Hardy joined the RAF on a short service commission in February 1939.
After completion of training Pilot Officer Hardy joined the newly-reformed 234 Squadron at Leconfield on 6th November 1939 (The squadron was reformed on 20th August).
The squadron, equipped with Blenheims, Battles and Gauntlets, flew on coastal patrols until it received Spitfire Mark Is, which it took to Church Fenton in May 1940 on becoming operational.
The squadron moved to St. Eval in Cornwall on 18th June 1940, and then to Middle Wallop in Hampshire on 14th August 1940.
At around 18.30 hours on 15th August 1940, the squadron was in combat with enemy fighters off Swanage. During the melee, Richard’s Spitfire Mk I (N3277) was severely damaged. He force landed at Cherbourg and was made a P.O.W. His aircraft was captured intact by the Germans.
While interned, Richard received promotion to Flying Officer on 6th November 1940, and a year later promotion to Flight Lieutenant.
He was freed in 1945, and released from the RAF in 1946.
Flight Lieutenant Richard Hardy passed away in September 1997.
