Michael was with 54 Squadron in 1941.
At around 9.15 am on 27th August, Michael was forced to land due to lack of fuel whilst returning from operations over France. He guided his Spitfire Vb (P8792) down onto a hay field, but the rough terrain caused the undercarriage to collapse. He was unhurt.

On 4th September 1941, Michael was shot down and killed in Spitfire Vb (W3620) by a Bf 109 while escorting Blenheims near Gravelines.
