W/Cmdr F. V. Morello was born on 21st May, 1916.
Francis joined as a Cadet at the
Stonyhurst College Officers Training Corps
in 1925. He was given a short service commission on 3rd December, 1936, in the General Duties Branch.
On 19th December, he went to No. 4 Flying Training School and from there joined 8 Squadron on 16th July, 1937 as Pilot Officer. Francis was promoted over the next two years through Acting Flying Officer, Acting Flight Lieutenant, and Flying Officer. His commission was extended on 29th May, 1939, and he went to Nos. 13 and 15 Flying Training School, where he became Flight Lieutenant.
He was posted to 501 Squadron on 8th October, 1940 and over the following five months went to 57 OTU and then 249 Squadron, finally taking up the position of Acting Squadron Leader of 33 squadron on 17th October, 1941.
On 27th October, 1941, Francis was posted to 112 Squadron as Commanding Officer. Within two months he was promoted to Temporary Squadron Leader, and on 30th March, 1942 went to 59 OTU.
After commanding 4453 Squadron from 12th June, 1942, he transferred to the Reserve of Air Force Officers, and on 18th October joined 453 Squadron.
Francis was posted to No. 1
Air Armament School
on 7th November, and on to 13 OTU on 1st January, 1944.
On 6th August, Francis went to the
Aeronautical and Armament Experimental
Establishment, and on 17th February, 1945, to an Air Ministry Unit as Acting Wing Commander.
He remained in the Air Ministry in one capacity or another until the late 1950s.
