Plane crash in Lifstan Way
by Vic Roome

As far as I can remember, in the summer of 1940, there were continuous air raids in the Southend area.
Mum, Dad and I were watching the dog fights going on from the safety of our Anderson shelter. We saw a plane that had been hit and was obviously going to crash. Then we heard the noise of the crash nearby.
After the ‘all clear’ sounded I dashed down to Lifstan Way where I saw that the German aircraft has crashed on the top of the earth banking on the left-hand-side before the L.M.S. railway bridge. The debris was scattered all over the place. I had hope of getting something like a gun or the like for a souvenir but the police turned up and quickly cordoned-off the area.

Further recollections:
There was an Ack-Ack site at the top of Bournemouth Park Road.
Two bombs fell on a farmhouse near Eastern Avenue.
An oil bomb fell in the area of Lime Road and Trinity Road.
