IN MEMORY OF
This is a new section to the website, and one that we feel is an essential piece of work. Like most of the website, it is a work in progress, and we shall be adding to it regularly.
This page focuses on the Cemeteries and the Memorials in Southend and the surrounding area for the fallen in the First and Second World Wars.
We have made the names 'clickable' on Plot R of Sutton Cemetery to reveal a close-up of the headstone and of the inscription, and of relative details where known. We shall also, where possible, include photographs should they become available to us.

St. Mary's and All Saint's Church, Stambridge
There are two plaques within the parish church of St Mary and All Saints, to those who fell in both World Wars. The World War One plaque is wall mounted, made of brass, with a small picture in the centre of it; it names six men who died in that conflict. The World War Two plaque is rectangular, sits below the World War One plaue, and is also made of brass; it names four men who died.
Also within the village, in Stambridge Road, is a memorial hall erected to the memory of those who died in World War1 and opened by the Bishop of Chelmsford 17th January 1922

Sutton and Shopland, All Saints Church
The Parish of Sutton with Shopland was formed in 1933 by the amalgamation of Shopland and Sutton Parishes. The church itself, is of Norman origin previously having been the Sutton Parish Church. It boasts a medieval coffin lid and brass of 1371 which came from the ancient church at Shopland, which was demolished following bomb damage. The brass depicts Sir Thomas Stapel, Sergeant at Arms to Edward III, in armour such as he would have worn at the Battle of Crecy. It is a remarkable fact that, in the whole of the 20th Century, only four Rectors served the parish.

Canon Robert Stuart King succeeded his father in 1892 and served until his death in 1950. He was followed by Father John Head, Rector until 1973. Father Raymond Smith was appointed to the post in 1986, and was succeeded by Father Stephen Jones who served until 2001. The present Rector is Father Kenneth Havey.

North Road Burial Ground, Westcliff-on-Sea

The Burial Ground in North Road is situated on four acres of grounds originally owned by Daniel Scratton. It was home to the Rochford Hundred Cricket Club before they moved to their next premises off Milton Road (their Pavilion being opposite the future Cricketers Pub).
The cemetery was opened opened in 1879 by the Bishop of St. Albans as an overflow for the churchyard of St. Mary's Church in East Street, Prittlewell.
It was effectively closed in 1914 to further burials although they can take place in existing family plots.

Other War Memorials
in Southend and District
The Cenotaph Clifftown Parade, Southend-on-Sea
Southend’s first War memorial was erected on the Cliffs above the Western Esplanade, at a cost of £5.500, in the memory of local men who fell during the war of 1914-1918. Later an inscription commemorating the Second World War, 1939-1945, was added. However, they bear no names.
Priory Park Southend-on-Sea
The Memorial Roll with names is mounted on the west wall of the building known as The Refectory, part of the mansion complex. Below it, the names of the Great War Fallen are seen through a row of four glass 'windows'.
Priory Park Southend-on-Sea
Also in Priory Park, close to and southwest of the Refectory, is another memorial in the form of a public drinking fountain. Of grey Cornish granite, it is an obelisk mounted on a squared-off base column on a two-tier plinth, having a total height of about 8 ft.
Southend Police Station Southend-on-Sea
Three plaques on the wall opposite the main entrance; one each for comrades lost during the First and Second World Wars. The centre plaque is dedicated to War Reserve Constable Edward Gillingham, his wife Cecily (1940), and to Thomas Joyce of the Coldstream Guards (1916).
Chalkwell Park
The Fallen in the Second World War are commemorated, too, by a Garden of Remembrance in Chalkwell Park, dedicated in April 1952. The gates to the garden were presented by Mr. Percy Raven in memory of his son, Warrant Officer Ronald Raven, R.A.O.C., and of his comrades who fell with him.

The Poppy Day Appeal
The Poppy Day Appeal is not confined to a few weeks in late October and early November; in fact, the appeal is a continuous fund raising activity going on quietly throughout the year.

Wearing the Poppy
The poppy, an endearing emblem of both the remembrance of fallen comrades as well as the work of the British Legion. The battalions of Legion members, who always wear a blazer or suit, the button hole in their lapel ensures they have no problem in fixing their poppy. However, for the rest of us, fixing a poppy to more casual wear or working clothes is problematic.

Try putting the plastic stem through a jumper and within minutes, it is has rolled upside-down if not fallen off and, as likely as not, the jumper is ruined with a permanent hole through it.
Then there's the method of using the open-ended pin provided which, unless you are lucky, eventually stabs you in the chest or the poppy drops off, unnoticed, later on.
The stems used to have plastic barbs, but these just made for bigger holes in your clothing, and did not cure the 'roll-round' factor.

In the 'good old days', the poppy had a wire stem which could be inserted between the weave of a jumper (or even a coat) and was thin enough not to cause any damage. The end of it could also be bent around to prevent it from coming loose.
