IN MEMORY OF
This is a new section to the website, and one that we feel is an essential piece of work. Like most of the website, it is a work in progress, and we shall be adding to it regularly.
This page focuses on the Cemeteries and the Memorials in Southend and the surrounding area for the fallen in the First and Second World Wars.
We have made the names 'clickable' on the image of Plot R of Sutton Cemetery to reveal a close-up of the headstone and of the inscription, and of relative details where known. We shall also, where possible, include photographs should they become available to us.

Leigh-on-Sea, St. Clement's Church

The church is of the later perpendicular period, built entirely of Kentish ragstone, and comprises a nave and chancel with north aisle and chapel of corresponding length. At the west end of the nave is an 80 ft tower. On the south of the tower is a red brick porch of the Tudor style. The chancel, which was of the time of Edward III, had been greatly barbarised by former rectors, one of whom, to save the cost of re-glazing, blocked the south window with red brick. The church was restored about the year 1837-8. The font, previously of barbarous character, was replaced by another of quasi-perpendicular design, and this was removed in 1871 and a third substituted, a copy of the font in St. Mary's Church in Prittlewell.

Little Wakering, St. Mary the Virgin Church
St. Mary the Virgin Church, Little Wakering, features an 11th Century Nave. The tower was erected by Bishop Wakering of Norwich in 1416 in gratitude to God for the safety given at the Battle of Agincourt. The church contains a rood loft staircase and an ancient whipping post. A George II Royal Arms hatchment is also on view.

Prittlewell, St. Mary's Church
East Street, Prittlewell, Southend-on-Sea
For more than a thousand years there has been a church on the site of Saint Mary's, Prittlewell. In the north wall of the Chancel are the remains of a Saxon doorway and surrounding wall built in the early 7th Century. In the 11th Century, the present Norman nave was erected, and in 12th Century, the processional aisle, with massive octagonal columns. The Chancel Tower (containing a peal of ten bells dating from 1603), the Jesus Chapel, south aisle and porch, and on 7th May 1478, the Jesus Guild was licensed by King Edward IV. In the church is an octagonal 16th Century font, a rood loft stairway, and the panels of an old dragon chest. The oldest register commences in 1645.
A memorial was erected in 1922 to the men of the parish who fell in the Great War, 1914-1918, and a list of their names was placed in the porch.

Second World War Memorial
In the Second World War Saint Mary's suffered blast damage from bombs falling nearby, but daily services continued at the normal times throughout those difficult years.
A memorial was placed in the porch listing the names of the men who fell in the World War of 1939-1945.

Rochford, St. Andrew's Church

St. Andrew’s, built mostly of brick, dates largely from a rebuild in the 15th century. There is a big brick tower, and a totally unexpected pair of half timbered gables. Its unique feature is that it is the only church to be completely surrounded by a golf course. The church is positioned quite separately from the town, in deference to the owners of Rochford Hall, and is now divided from the town by the railway. In the former church on the site, Henry Bolingbroke married Mary de Bohun. Henry later seized the crown as Henry IV, but Mary had died before this, and is buried at Leicester. She was the mother of Henry V.

Shoeburyness, St. Andrews Church

The Parish Church of St. Andrew's was founded between 1100 and 1130 as an outreach of the Priory at Prittlewell, itself an outreach of the Priory of Cluny in France. Its two doorways are speimens of Early Norman work. The timber porch over the south doorway was added about 1450. Fairly small (100 - 130 people at maximum) The church consists of a flint rubble tower with nave and chancel of ragstone rubble with Caen stone quoins. There are excellent stained glass windows which together with the interior have been considerably renovated over recent years. It has a separate church hall which was built in the 1930s on land beside the churchyard.

Shoeburyness, St. Mary the Virgin Church

The church is an ancient stone building built in the 13th Century, 1230-1250. It consists of a Chancel and Nave. In the Chacel is an aumbry of the 13th Century, and another of the 14th Century. The north wall and the roof of the nave was rebuilt in the 14th Century. The three north windows of the nave feature a small amount of glass of the time. The top stage of the tower, also rebuilt in the 14th Century, terminates in a shingled spire and contains two bells. An ancient Tabe of Affinity is fixed in the nave on the south wall. A marble top, dated 1746, covers the Holy Table.

The parish registers date back to 1680 and are in a good state of preservation.

Shoeburyness War Memorial

Southchurch, Holy Trinity Church
In the year A.D. 824, the monk Lifstan gave the lordship and church to Christchurch, Canterbury, and this gift was confirmed by Edward the Confessor (1042-1066). No trace of the original wooden church remains, but the ancient nave was built in the 12th Century. There are two Norman doorways of this date.
The Chancel was rebuilt in 13th Century. The bell, still calling people to worship, was installed in the 14th century and is inscribed "Johannes". In the year 1906 a large modern nave by Comper was added to the north wall of the ancient building. The registers of the church date back to 1695, and the old parish accounts from 1681-1682.
After the second World War, the floor level was raised as a memorial to those who gave their  lives in the war, and the chancel has been enriched by a carved reredos and chancel rails. The carved oak pulpit, clergy stall and oak pews have been installed by direct gifts,  and many of the pews were given in memory of loved-ones.

Southend-on-Sea, St. John the Baptist Church
Church Road, Southend-on-Sea
St. John the Baptist Church was the first Parish Church in Southend. The churchyard was used for burials between 1870 and 1898, after which burials were allowed only in reserved spaces. At this time the Borough Council allocated land for the cemetery at Sutton Road. Thomas Dowsett, the town's first Major, is buried here, as are writers Robert Buchanan, Harriet Jay and Warwick Deeping. St. John's is open with regular services on a Sunday and Thursday.
Special civic services for war veterans and for festivals are staged throughout the year, as are concerts.
