This feature of the website is one that we feel is an essential piece of work. It focuses on the Churchyards, Cemeteries and the Memorials in Southend and the surrounding area, and we are intending to build a complete index of the fallen of the First and Second World Wars.
We have made the names 'clickable' on Plot R of Sutton Cemetery to reveal a close-up of the headstone and of the inscription, and of relative details where known. We have also taken many photographs of the headstones, and hope to eventually include those of the servicemen were interred overseas). |

Ashingdon, St. Andrew's Church |
St. Andrew's Church,
which was known ar the time as Ashingdon Minster,
was founded by King Canute to commemorate his victory over Edmund Ironside in the battle of 1016 on the hill where the church now stands. Archbishop Stigand was Ashingdon's first priest when he was a young man at the opening of the new church in 1020 -
Most of what still stands is mediaeval and some may be based on the original Minster.
Though lawns surround the church today, legend says that after the battle no grass would grow on the 'bloodstained' hill.
|
|
In medieaval times, a shrine in the church was said to bestow fertility upon women. The shrine was lost at the Dissolution, but the church retained its reputation as a lucky place in which to marry." |

Barling Magna, All Saints Church |
This church is from the 'Perpendicular' Period, built of Kentish ragstone. It comprises a nave with north aisle, a chancel (formerly leaded), with a sacristy on the north side, and a west tower embattled. In the south chancel wall is a priscina, and in the north wall a credence table. The arches that divide the nave from the south aisle are of the 15th century, sustained on fluted octangular columns, with moulded capitals. The font is of the 15th century, but has a rude date subsequently cut upon it: June 1585. The pulpit is 17th century, of carved oak ornamented with flowers and foliage. There were formerly three bells, one is gone, another cracked, and bound with an iron hoop, which conceals the name of the maker. It is dated 1666. The remaining one "John Dier Made Me".
|
|
Whether this was the original site or not for the first holy place in Barling is not known; many records were lost in the Fire of London and so knowledge of the earliest church is scant.

Canewdon, St. Nicholas Church |
The 14th Century Church, which consists of a body and north aisle, 62 ft long and 36 ft wide, and stands on a hill 128 feet above the marshes. The chancel formerly had a chapel or vestry on the north side. In the south wall is a large credence table. Its Tower and Porch is 15th Century. The Tower contains five bells.
The South Porch, built around the time of Edward IV, is of stone, with embattled front. Roman tiles are worked up with the materials, both here and on the south side of the church. At the west and of the nave is a remnant of the old benches, with poppy head finials. On one beam is the date 1698. The pulpit is oak in the Jacobean style.

|
Canewdon church has had a reputation for many years for being probably one of the most haunted sites in Essex. Local superstition has it that while the church tower stands, there will always remain six witches in Canewdon. |

Eastwood, St. Laurence All Saints Church |
| The first definite record of Eastwood Church is in 1100 AD when it became a
chapel to the Priory whence monks were sent to serve it but there is evidence of
a church at Eastwood before the date, probably the Norman nave of the present
church with a small apsidal chancel.
The Building is of
Ragstone rubble with some puddingstone flints and Roman and Tudor brickwork. The Norman Nave has the remains of three windows high in the North Wall. The Chancel
Arch is 14th Century with
traces of an earlier roof above it. There are
three original bells, two 14th Century and one 17th Century,
recently re-hung with three new bells to make a peal of six.
| |
St Laurence was martyred in 259 AD. The church has drawn people to worship God here for almost a thousand years and continues to do so. |

Foulness, St. Mary the Virgin Church |
A previous church was erected after the Reformation, as it contained no vestiges of those accessories to those to the pre-reformational ritual, which are usually met with. It was of wood, boarded inside and out. It had a spire, and in the vestry beneath was a fire place. The church was pulled down in 1848 after the the parishioners decided it was in a poor state of repair and the size of the population of the parish and had outgrown the small building.
The present church was designed by William Hambley, and erected in 1850 a little to the west of the site of the original church, on a foundation of concrete. It was built in the Early English style, with a spire, a nave with two aisles, and chancel.
|
|
The churchyard was expanded, using ground given by George Finch. The new church was consecrated in 1853 and dedicated to "Saint Mary the Virgin, Saint Thomas and All Saints". |
There are three graves here of three Sailors of the Great War. |

Hawkwell, St. Mary the Virgin Parish Church |
The church is believed to have been erected in the 14th century. It is comprised of nave and chancel, built of rubble, with stone buttresses, and has a timber tower with a shingle covered spire. This is known to have contained two bells, which had been removed; the present one is dated 1806. On the south side of the chancel is a piscina. The carved oak pulpit is dated 1870, and was the work of the Rector, Reverend J. Montagu, succeeding one that was erected about 1650. The font is of carved Caen stone, with an oak cover, bearing the same date as the pulpit. William de Bayeuse was the first Rector, but the dates are not known.
