Portrait

F/Sgt A. E. Joyce flew with 234 squadron out of RAF Ibsley.
He was shot down on 30th December, 1942, by flak from Brest whist taking on a Messerschmitt 109 . His aerilon was shot up and he could not stop the plane spinning so bailed out over France and finished up in a hospital where they operated on him to remove the pieces of shrapnel. In early 1943, Albert was transferred from the hospital in Brest to stalag luft III. He tried an escape from the stalag by going through the fence at a point which could not be observed by the guards with a man called Saxton or Sexton. He was shot in the mouth but apparently, this was not immediately identified by the german doctors as the bullet was lodged in his neck and entered through his mouth so there was no entry wound.
His was hospitalised but died from the wound on 12th June, 1943.
He was buried with full military honours by the Germans in the stalag luft III cemetery and he was later moved to the commonwealth graves in Poznam Poland.
