At around 9.15 am on 27th August 1941, Michael was forced to land due to lack of fuel whilst returning from ops over France. He guided his Spitfire MkVb (P8792) down onto a hay field, but the rough terrain caused the undercarriage to collapse. He was unhurt.

P/O Evans was killed on 4th September 1941.
