Sgt. Ashurst, whilst returning from an escort of Blenheim bombers to their target of Lille Power Station on 27 August 1941, ditched his Spitfire V (R7273) when he ran out of fuel. He bailed out, striking his aircraft and breaking his thigh as he did, but was later rescued.
